When there is a lull...

If your shop is quiet - take the time to branch out. Learn a new skill, come up with a new design, think up new products.

A) It is tremendous fun, B) more skills are always a plus, C) you might attract customers that you didn't "catch" before.

IMG_9408I have mentioned before that eventually, DIY kits and greeting cards will enter my store. Everything is here and prepared, but... I am still swamped with custom orders, and I got a new toy. :)

I broke the bank on a new sewing/ embroidery machine, a Singer Futura CE 150. It is gorgeous. Please note that I have never really worked on a machine... I basically only sew by hand. Embroidery machine? Have only ever seen the end result and been impressed.

IMG_9412 So not only do I spend 800 Euros on a new machine, purely based on forum reviews, I also don't waste time embroidering bought patterns but immediately start stitching my own designs, made in Embird. And I am loving it!

Plan for tomorrow: photo session. I gotta add all those critters that haven't been listed yet, plus addition glass stuff, plus possibly some first embroidered keychains and stuff.

Silence...

I am busy... wholesale and custom orders, possibly finding a new job for July, trying to decide what else to do, and spending money. Not the smartest thing to do... but I fell in love with a combined sewing and embroidery machine.

So as of tomorrow, I will be even busier - playing with my new toy.

No need to be alarmed!

I will now start changing the whole layout around, so expect to see weird things, possibly.

Okay, the worst is over - though it ain't perfect yet. But let me know what you think? I was in the mood for something new, I am afraid to say. Next project: my own website.

Getting back into the game

At last, I am back into Etsy... Current checklist:

- send out convos to old friends
- read up on Storque, see what has changed
- get into forums again
- clean up blog
- get some stock ready
- photograph stock
- list again!

My first duty today (after sending out some convos) was closing down a reseller. *sigh* Same old, same old.

Except for the fact that my favorite supply site, Yahoo Auctions Singapore, has closed down. A huge site for finding Korean/ Asian suppliers, though: YesStyle.com

Took me one precious hour, but of course I found the mother lode. What surprised me, though, was that Etsy actually removed all items within 10 minutes of me flagging - wow. Need to dig deeper into forums to see how they are currently handling resellers.

So - you'll read me on a more or less daily basis again!

It's great to be back. :)

Looking for guest/ partner bloggers!

It is becoming clear that Etsy is just not a huge part of my day or week right now. I hope this will eventually change again, but right now, I am neglecting the shop as well as the blog.

Which still gets visitors each day, and I feel bad for them!

So please, if you are a good writer, feel like blogging about Etsy and wish to share the fun, drop me a line!

I am looking for 2-3 people willing to look at the marketing side of Etsy and not just showcase products or their own shop. Come up with tips, how-to's and templates, keep people updated on the changing policies at Etsy etc. And willing to write 2-3 posts a week, so we can keep this baby going again!

In return, you obviously get an Etsy widget in the sidebar, and the blog itself will be paid by me, so no costs, investment whatsoever.

The blog is hosted at Typepad, and you will get a guest author account, enabling you to write on this blog. For the first couple of posts, I would like to quickly read what you have written, after that I will let you post all by yourself.

Sounds good? Send me a message, comment below, and if possibly, a link to your website/ blog etc.

Some new furniture and details

Yeah, still busy with the apartment, which is about all the creative output I manage right now... haven't done anything Etsy-related for ages. Feel bad about it, but I want to get back two weeks from now, then really get Christmas season nailed down.

So instead of posting Etsy-related stuff, I have to limit myself to design-related stuff. Sorry!

LampI finally found a lamp I liked - since I only have 2,50m height, that was a challenge. Got two of these now, for the entrance as well as living room, and I might get a third for the kitchen... will see.

I love the fact that it tampers down, therefore not giving off bright light especially when looking up. And the red/ brushed steel works well in my place.

Matching the lamp, I settled on a 20l push can in brushed steel.
Trashcan
It also took me ages, but I have finally
settled on a TV, with help from a friend.

The thing is, I knew I wanted a flat screen. So I started looking at 22" LCD. The longer I looked, the more I wanted a large TV. And somehow, the price differences weren't that huge... But of course, I ended up spending 3x what I had planned initially. :)

But - I was at least smart enough to get a 37" instead of a 42"; just not enough distance between couch and TV.

It's a Panasonic PX 80 plasma, and it will get here Monday - my friend will help setting it up.

As you can see, I am spending serious money right now... but I cannot help it! I really, really want the apartment to be finished soon. And there is still soooo much to do.

Personally, I think US elections are way sexier than what we have here in Germany. But, obviously I cannot vote in November - if you are reading this from somewhere in the US, you can!

I won't even influence you by saying who I would vote for if I could... (Obama) :)

So go on, register to vote if you haven't done so already.

Apartment makeover, part II

Yup, still quiet, still busy with the apartment. :)

But, I figured I will "delight" you with some badly-made moodboards to give you an idea of my place. First of all, you need to understand that my apartment's layout is challenging at the best of times:
Apartment_furniture
This is what it will look like eventually. My bedroom doesn't really have doors, so I am inserting sliding doors to keep it separate.

The "studio" is nothing more than a large workspace on top of the washing machine/ dryer, with additional kitchen cupboards on the wall.

Everything is open layout and... well, small. But, the weird layout means I can be creative with what space is used how. :)

This is to give you an idea of what the living room will consist of:
Moodboard_livingroom
Can't do much about the walls, they are structured, which I think is a bummer in a space that small. I have wooden parquet floors, which are gorgeous, and a door to the garden. Notice those pillows? Yes, they are from Joom at Etsy - will eventually have 4 of those on the otherwise non-descript (but comfy) couch.

Behind the couch, the walls will be hung with art and art and more art. A lot from Etsy, some that I have been collecting for a while, sculptures as well as 2D prints and originals... I know it is daring to have very busy walls in a tiny room, but I cannot help myself... I love busy walls with art.

I had to include the tv - it will get here in September and I cannot wait... I am actually getting myself a plasma, my first real tv, it feels like. It fits nicely in the window sill, so no need for extra furniture... and to be honest, there just is no room for any additional furniture anyway.

My bedroom is still a challenge:
Moodboard_bedroom
All that fits in there is a bed and closet. The bed will be raised to app 40cm, to create more space underneath. And tobe honest, there is a real chance that I will eventually paint the bed and closet white, because coupled with the wooden floors, it is just too many different types of wood on top of each other.

The sliding doors will be fit next week and will separate the sleeping space from the hallway/ studio/ kitchen.

There is a built-in closet with the water heater opposite, which I have already painted white, and a gorgeous huge buddha painting next to it, which I cherish.

The studio will consist of a work space on top of the washing machine/ dryer, basically lengthening the current kitchen with cupboards as well. There, I will eventually have space for my craft supplies, fusing oven, sewing machine, etc. The studio is almost 2m long, in the end, with tree additional kitchen cupboards on top.

The kitchen is pretty much a hallway, with an old wooden dresser on one side and the kitchen on the other. Again, everything is open, so you step from the entrance/ office directly into the kitchen.

Either the office or kitchen will get my newest large painting, a gorgeous chimpanzee that is 90x90cm.
024

The office currently consists of a dresser, an old table that functions as a desk, and Ikea book cases... Oh, and loads of ferret stuff, somehow.

Because that is an additional challenge at all times - incorporating the ferrets. Meaning, I cannot have plants anywhere in reach, The living room needs to be separated (in this case with a low board to step over), and I have hammocks, litter boxes and other stuff around the place as well.

Rightnow, because there just isn't enough storage space, I also have stuff on top of the closet and kitchen... once the bed is raised and extra cupboards installed, that will be empty again.

I cannot do a real Feng-Shui apartment, but I am trying to keep clear lines, no clutter, and have everything stored out of view.

So, still loads of stuff to do... but at least now you know why I am being quiet right now!

Apartment makeover

I am sorry for being so quiet lately... I am in the middle of an apartment makeover. It will look smashing once it is done, but oh my... when will it ever be done?!

I am getting a new bed delivered today, since my own broke down. Yes seriously. No, not what you think... get your mind out of the gutter! :)

It's from Ikea and will need to be pimped next weekend. Meaning I will add 50cm of space underneath it - no clue how exactly, but I will get to that when I visit the DIY again. Some sort of stable legs with additional attachment to the wall, me thinks. And then eventually add doors, so I have more space to store my things. Like suitcase, ferret travel cases, boxes full of supplies.

For supplies, I already have three extra kitchen cupboards here which I still need to assemble. Plus, I need to finish my studio space - a large board across the washing machine and dryer, again after a DIY visit.

Plus, I have a sofa delivered tomorrow, with my old one and tons of other stuff going to the waste center. I was adult, though, and resisted getting a new sofa. It's second-hand, looks like it's new, is exactly the one I wanted... and it's only 350€ instead of 950€. My finances will thank me later.

So, somewhere between today and tomorrow night, I need to finish clearing my apartment, deciding what needs to go to the waste center, and have the apartment look like something that I can let strangers enter... Will I succeed? I will have to. :)

But... once it is done, you will receive glorious pictures!

Arbitrary "law"

60_a Well, this has been an ugly day for me... I have been kicked out of the Etsy PlushTeam.

As you know, I am one of the more outspoken defenders of copyright on Etsy, so the accusal of copying another Etsy member is hitting me hard. What is really annoying me is that I haven't been told who I am supposedly copying.

I have only received an e-mail informing me that I am copying someone's "signature style", informing me that the member has been encouraged to request deletion of the item, a demand to take the listing down - oh, and informing me that I have been removed from the Street Team, no further questions asked.

Funny enough, the email was called "questions regarding item", while of course no questions were asked, nor information given.

You can see the Blimp in question - am I missing something? Especially since it's been listed since November 2007... My Blimps are basically just socks where the opening is sewn into two ears. Faces are always embroidered with thick yarn, designs vary - I get most of my faces by doodling comics and cartoons or going through Japanese craft books.

Which copyright laws am I breaking? Whose signature style is this supposed to be? As far as I know, I am pretty much the only one making these sock Blimps. And sorry if I am wrong, but what is so signature about any of it?

Seriously, I am stumped. And of course pissed of, because I faithfully paid my dues (kiss that money goodbye) and am given no explanation whatsoever.

Update 07-03-08

Another team member have since informed me of who she thinks might be concerned. By now, the seller in question has also contacted me, and we'll see how that plays out.

As you can see, I have deleted the Blimp in question. I know I am not breaking any laws, especially as we are talking details in the face, but it is not a typical Blimp of mine in any case, and I do not offend - that one will just be sold locally in one of my other outlets, or maybe given as a gift. Though all of my friends have recently been getting boys, no girls - ach, something will come up.

I'll keep you posted!
